Why is Candle Care Important?

Is candle care important?

Yes, I am here to tell you that even your candles need care – anything else? BUT I am also here to tell you that it’s easyyyy. If you want to get the most out of your candles and keep them burning even and clean follow these tips.

Have you ever experienced the dreaded ‘tunnelling‘? You know, where the wick is way down there and your wax has become more of walls rather a candle. This mess all starts with the first light. I know, I know, you get home with your brand new candles and you just can’t wait to light it and fill your home with that delicious scent you mulled over in the aisles of the store. But then something comes up; bedtime, supper, appointment…and you blow it out within the hour.

Here is where it goes wrong. You must burn the candles long enough to create an even ‘pool’ of melted wax. Doing this on the first light sets up the foundation for a clean and even burn the whole way through. Bonus points if you’re buying a natural wax candle such as a beeswax, or soy, your chances of a clean burn are even higher!

Wicks

Now that we have covered the tunnelling issues we need to talk about wicks. Trimming your wicks whether they are cotton or wood is important for many reasons. Not only will your candles last longer but you will reduce the risk of a fire AND excess soot. The recommended height is 1/4 of an inch and can be done easily with a pair of scissors or just breaking off the burnt part with your fingertips if we’re dealing with a wooden wick. Or if you want to bring your candle game up a level, take a look at these wick trimmers (they also make a great gift when paired with a new candle!).

So there you have it. Two candle care tips to keeping those beautiful candles burning happy. See, what did I tell you? Easy, right?
